In honor of International Women’s Day, we’re popping up That Lady Thing: Rising Like a Phoenix, from March 8th to 10th, 2019, at the Phoenix Hotel in San Francisco.
That Lady Thing is a digital and experiential pop-up activation born in early 2018. Jamie Shaw, our US creative director, led the original activation that borrowed from the growing trend of pop-up selfie museums. But, instead of candy and confetti, this activation was different, and embedded the backdrops and installations with powerful messages about the wage gap, gender bias, women in leadership, and objectification. Styling itself as “part speakeasy, part speak out”, this pop-up had purpose.
The outreach from women, press, and brands inspired Jamie and her team to produce a much more impactful event. So, they designed more wallpapers, built better exhibits, recruited sponsors, and aligned with the National Women’s Law Center to raise money for work that serves women in the workplace and the world.
In August 2018, That Lady Thing popped up in San Francisco and hosted 1,500 women, across five days, and attracted some notable headlines from Forbes, The BBC, The Guardian, Timeout, The San Francisco Chronicle and many more. Ever think you’d read a BBC headline, ‘Nipple baths, climbing walls and raining dollar bills’?
That Lady Thing continues to be a space that celebrates women of all definitions and welcomes allies who wish to join in support. The focus is on strong cocktails and stronger voices, smart style and smarter conversation. This pop up attracts feminists with a fun streak and creatives with a conscience. The activation exists to raise awareness and raise funds for organizations that support women in the workplace, and in the world.
Our venue for this year’s edition is the Phoenix Hotel, a rock ‘n’ roll landmark in the centre of San Francisco, which is powered by a team of kickass women under celebrated hotelier, Liz Lambert.
Content is revolving, so expect to see some old classics, and some new hits from artists and designers, including Raisa Yavneh, Designsake Studio, Dan Windsor, Hope Meng, Dance Brigade, and Dwoira Galilea.
Once again, That Lady Thing and Cogs & Marvel are proud to donate $10 of every ticket to the National Women’s Law Center, which champions policies and laws that help women and girls achieve their potential throughout their lives — at school, at work, at home, and in their communities. They are committed advocates who take on the toughest challenges, especially for women who are low-income, and those who face multiple forms of discrimination.
